    Question

Does anyone know a way to modify an audio head used for playback of magnetic tape to become a recording head? I want to take the Super 8mm Fullcoat reading head made by super8sound and use it to record audio onto the magnetic film. I'm sure there must be a way to do this.

You may well find that the record head will become a replay head (or vice versa) simply at the flick of a switch. Cassette recorders have been using a single head to do both job for years now, and although there are compromises that have to be accepted, the results can be very good indeed.

Of course the circuits feeding the head will be different as bias has to be applied during recording, but the physical attributes of the head itself are the same for rec and play.

Basicly, with a p/b head you can record as well, but with a record head you cannot p/b in good quality. Record heads has wider gaps than p/b heads and only would offer a limited frequency range.
For recording with a p/b head, you must provide a feeding circuit that provides the audio signal plus a high frequency bias signal. For re-recording, a erasing head working with high-frequency current would be good. But it?s a very tricky thing to built such a system by yourself, many fine-tuning and analouge knowledge is required!
